A FAREWELL TO NINIAN
Cardiff Council Leader Cllr Rodney Berman and the Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport Cllr Nigel Howells have both paid tribute to Ninian Park as she prepares to host her last scheduled fixture.
Cllr Berman said, “From joining the Football League to dreams of the old top flight. From finishing in the top two in the country to winning the FA Cup. From battling it out in Europe to the Premiership Dream - Ninian Park holds 99 years of footballing legacy within its stands and I know every supporter will cherish all the memories and accounts of times gone by. “
As every fan will be aware, this Saturday April 25th sees the last scheduled match at Ninian Park. While the likely chance of another game still remains, the visit of Ipswich Town will draw nearly 100 years of league fixtures to a close there.
Cllr Berman added, “I know there will be people in the stands who’ve spent decades cheering Cardiff City and others who may’ve fallen in love with their ground more recently. Either way, I’m sure it’s going to be very hard to leave.”
“Whatever the future brings Ninian Park will always hold its place in our capital’s history.Aside from the sport that built her there has also been the small matter of a visit from the Pope of course. Not to mention Bob Marley’s gig in 1976, rugby and boxing.”
Cllr Howells added, ““Whether it’s that incredible win over Real Madrid, a European Championship Quarter Final for our national side, or the promotion winning season of 2003, we’ve all got memories that will live with us forever.
“I’ve spoken to so many people and heard so many positive words used to describe her. We know she has some of the last remaining terraces in the top leagues and over the years they’ve helped provide a formidable 12th man.”
“We have to move on however and I know that unrivalled atmosphere will only get stronger in the new stadium. Ninian Park’s been an incredible asset to the club she serves but her final act for them is to hand over the reins and allow a big sister to take over.”
