CELEBRATING WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY IN THE CAPITAL CITY
CELEBRATING WORLD FAIR TRADE DAY IN THE CAPITAL CITY

To celebrate World Fair Trade Day on May 9th Fair Trade Cardiff has teamed up with Fair Trade shops across the capital to create the Cardiff Fair Trade Bag.

Those who purchase a fairly traded product from Fair Dos, Madame Fromage, Pulse Wholefoods, Halcyon Daze or Embassy Café will receive a Cardiff Fair Trade Bag*.

The bags were produced by Bishopston Trading Company whose products are made in K.V.Kuppam an area made up of several South Indian villages.  The Bags are made from 100% organic cotton fairly traded from South India.

Fair Trade has helped change the lives of the people who work for Bishopston Trading Company. They are now able to support their families with a fair wage and work in an environment which is safe. It has also given many women the opportunity to learn a trade and earn money for their family.

The 2009 World Fair Trade day also sees Cardiff celebrating its fifth anniversary as a Fairtade City and to mark the anniversary a special flower bed has been planted in the shape of the Fairtrade Mark outside the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones Said: “The Cardiff Fair Trade bag is a great way to promote and encourage people to buy fairly traded goods and it also helps promote the message to reuse shopping bags.  Cardiff is proud to be a Fairtrade City and the special Fairtrade Mark flower bed at Cardiff Castle shows our pride in full bloom.”
