Inspectors praise Corpus Christi Catholic High School

Corpus Christi Catholic High School is celebrating a successful Estyn inspection report after being awarded the top grade in all 13 key questions inspected - a level of success which has only been achieved by a very small number of schools in Wales.

The school was described as being very good with many outstanding features. These are evident in the standard of pupils’ achievement, the quality of education, the care for pupils, the effectiveness of leadership at all levels and the use of resources.

Governors and staff are particularly pleased that the report identifies Corpus Christi’s “unquestionable Catholic ethos and (that) the school’s values are firmly rooted in the Christian principles that permeate all aspects of school life.”

As a result, inspectors noted that “the way in which the school cares for pupils is outstanding. It provides a happy, supportive and safe environment in which pupils can learn.”

They concluded that “the school is extremely successful in its aim to give every learner the opportunity to succeed.”

92 per cent of  lessons observed received grades 1 or 2 and the proportion of lessons awarded the top grade was twice the national average.  Inspectors felt that “teaching staff are well-qualified, enthusiastic and energetic” and that “relationships between teachers and learners are outstanding and a notable strength of the school.”

The report also refers to “a culture of excellence” with an “exceptionally high standard of teaching” which caters for every pupil, including both the most able and those with additional needs.

Headteacher, David Stone, said “We are delighted that inspectors identified so many outstanding features in all areas of school life. They recognised the strong emphasis on learning that we’ve promoted in recent years including the development of pupils’ Emotional Literacy, the encouragement of enriched, life-long learning and the introduction of an Integrated Curriculum in Year 7.

“We’re very pleased that the reports comment on the school’s collaborative approach with parents, parishes, primary schools, Saint David’s College, the other schools in the Faith Based Learning Network and the Schools Service. We’re particularly appreciative of the strong partnership between pupils, parents, staff and governors, all of whom are fully committed to the values of the school.”

He added: “Naturally, the pupils deserve much of the credit for such positive inspection reports which praise their very good behaviour, their desire to learn and their willingness to co-operate with each other.”

The full inspection reports can be found at the Estyn (www.estyn.gov.uk) and Archdiocesan (www.rcadc.org) websites.  There is also a link to both reports on the school’s own website (www.corpuschristi.cardiff.sch.uk).
