LIBRARY SERVICE PEAKS WITH SUCCESS |

Libraries in Cardiff are reaping the benefits of long-term investment in books and buildings with an increase in visitor numbers in branches across the city.
Book issues are up by 12 per cent and visits up by 22 per cent across the board. This success is due in part to long-term investment in the book fund and buildings with renovation projects at Ely, Rhiwbina, Fairwater, Llanrumney, Grangetown, Penylan, Rhydypennau and Llandaff North proving to be very popular with many libraries achieving their highest issue figures so far this century.
In line with the successful opening of the stunning new Cardiff Central Library all libraries in the city have been equipped with the new cutting-edge RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system which enables easy self issue and return of books by customers so librarians have more time to interact with visitors.
Cllr Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture said “The credit crunch may be playing its part in this resurgence in popularity of branch libraries but investments across the board are clearly paying dividends as libraries are now much more welcoming environments to visit and linger over book selection or PC use.
“It is gratifying to see that the investment and hard work of the last few years are beginning to pay off for the people of Cardiff. Through the many recent refurbishment projects, the Council has endeavoured to create the finest resources for local citizens and visitors alike. It is extremely rewarding to know that everything that has been done for the community is appreciated by increased use of these wonderful facilities. These investments prove Cardiff Council’s commitment to providing the best facilities for its citizens.”
