NEW MUSEUM TO TELL STORY OF CARDIFF
NEW MUSEUM TO TELL STORY OF CARDIFF

In the summer of 2010 a new and exciting museum will open in Cardiff. The museum will tell the story of Cardiff and will be called The Cardiff Story.

The Cardiff Story team are now busy preparing the museum and needs the help of Cardiff residents to bring the story to life. From keepsakes of the past to trinkets of the modern age, the team needs your assistance in finding objects.

Over the next few months we will be asking for your help to find items for certain themes of The Cardiff Story. The first theme we are collecting items for is the Cardiff Docks.

The docks has been a key storyline in the history of Cardiff, over the years they have had many faces, from being a thriving dock yard, housing a multi- cultural community in Tiger Bay to being the modern day tourist attraction of Cardiff Bay. Cardiff Docks has many stories to tell and we need your help in finding items that can help tell it.

Part of the gallery will be dedicated to the docklands and the Cardiff Story team is looking to complete a 3-D model of the docks set in 1913 when the docks were at their busiest. The team needs items which can illustrate some of the pivotal landmarks in the area including, the Queen Alexandra Dock, the Pierhead Building, the John Cory Sailor’s Rest Home, a ship Chandler’s shop, the Hamadryad Hospital ship, Bute Street police station, as well as houses to highlight differences between sea captains’ homes and the dock workers’.  The Cardiff Story also wants to show the modern day Cardiff Bay with the many restaurants, Welsh Millennium Centre and new homes and flats.

If you have any objects, items, photographs or stories that you feel could be used to interpret the 3D docks model then please contact the Cardiff Story Team on  02920 788 334 or email: cardiffstory@cardiff.gov.uk

If you’re not sure whether your memorabilia is suitable for The Cardiff Story then Project Officer, Victoria Rogers offers the following advice: “Museum objects don’t have to be worth a lot of money, nor be particularly old. What we’re really interested in are things that tell a story about Cardiff and its people. For example to bring the docks to life we have so far collected a chocolate tin that was given to children in Cardiff to celebrate the opening of the Queen Alexandra dock.  We’re looking for things that help to bring everyday lives to life for visitors, so objects can be as ‘ordinary’ as a sailors discharge book, or a trunk that a seaman used on ship.”

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells, Said: “The Cardiff Story is a very exciting and interesting project, as it’s created for the people of Cardiff by the people of Cardiff.

“Cardiff is a vibrant city which is steeped in history, the aim of The Cardiff Story is to capture not only the past but also the present.”
