Rhiwbina to become cold calling controlled zone from 5th October 2009
TRADING STANDARDS TO LAUNCH COLD-CALLING

As a measure designed to deter unwanted callers from disturbing residents, Cardiff Trading Standards is introducing Cold-Calling Control Zones in two designated areas of Rhiwbina.

The new zones are at Heol Llanishen Fach and Dan y Graig. The zones are being set up in response to reported incidences of cold-calling (doorstep selling) which particularly target those vulnerable to exploitation and other types of crime.

Appropriate signage has been installed advising callers of the new zones. Residents will also be issued with window stickers advising callers that they are in a Cold-Calling Control Zone. These measures are aimed at crime reduction without causing unnecessary restriction to legitimate business.

These new Cold-Calling Control Zones follow two successful pilot schemes in Heath and Canton during 2008. Of those residents who responded to an evaluation questionnaire after six months 80 per cent felt that they and their home are safer in the Cold Calling Control Zone. One person commented: "I feel more confident telling cold callers not to knock on my door because we are in a Cold Calling Control Zone."

Councillor Judith Woodman, Cardiff Council Deputy Leader,  Steven Hay from Cardiff Trading Standards and a representative from South Wales Police and will be available for a photograph and interview at 10.45am on Monday 5th October. The launch of the scheme will take place at the shopping area on Heol Llanishen Fach.
