SPECIAL REMEMBRANCE SERVICE TO MARK INSTALLATION OF NEW FAIRY GARDEN AT THORNHILL CREMATORIUM

Cardiff Council Bereavement Services will be holding a dedication and babies remembrance service on 28th June 2009 at 2pm to mark the installation of a new ‘fairy garden’. The service will be held in the Briwnant Chapel of Thornhill Crematorium followed by a re-dedication in the garden itself.

The recently completed  improvements to the Ilex Garden of Remembrance have taken place as a result of discussions with some bereaved families and the University of Wales Hospital, Cardiff.

The ‘fairy’ theme for the garden incorporates a fairy sculpture with toadstools made out of mahogany carved by a Welsh sculptor.  The work has enhanced the garden by providing a focal point for those visiting as well as a seating area.

The design also incorporates a mahogany bowl in which a memory pebble can be placed by parents who attend the remembrance service and future services for babies.

The service should last approximately 30 minutes and refreshments will be available afterwards. Members from the Cardiff SANDS (Stillbirths and Neo-natal Deaths) society will also be present at the service and will be available to provide assistance to those attending.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, said: “It is hoped that the fairy garden will be a place of tranquillity for families and friends to remember their loved ones.”
