Year six pupils row away with a competition
Year six pupils across Cardiff have embarked on a Welsh logo design competition this week to be in with a chance to have their design on the side of a boat travelling 3000 miles across the Atlantic.
Nick Jackson will be taking part in one of the world's toughest races when they compete in the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race 2009. They are the only Welsh team taking part and will be competing against as many as 30 other teams from around the world.
The competition is running from 1 to 30 June and the pupils have design a Welsh flag on an A4 piece of paper. The rower travelling across the Atlantic is giving year six pupils the chance to have their design printed onto the side of his boat that will stay with him throughout the entire journey.
Nick Jackson said: “I really want to involve the community in what I'm doing as Atlantic Dragon is the only team from Cardiff and even Wales entered into the race. We're also raising money for Cardiff based Cancer Research Wales.
“I thought a competition in Cardiff schools would be an ideal way to involve the Cardiff community and for the winner it means their design will travel 3,000 miles across the Atlantic!”
The 23 foot boat will set off on 6 December 2009 and row 3000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Spanish island of La Gomera to Antigua in the Caribbean and is raising money for Cancer Research Wales. Judging of the competition will take place between the 6 and 10 July and the winner will be announced 15 July.
Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Freda Salway, said: “This is a lovely competition to be running and I encourage as many year six pupils as possible to take part.
“Nick is extremely brave and is doing it for a worthy cause. Having the Welsh flag with him along the journey will be a great home comfort. Good luck to all who take part.”
